Initial Target Experiments on the Upgraded OMEGA Laser System

ثبت نشده
چکیده

A major program to denionstrate the feasibility of direct-drive laser fusion is underway at LLE. The overall goal of this program is to develop an understanding of target physics at the 30-kJ level that will allow the performance of direct-drive capsules designed for use with the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the 1 to 2-MJ level to be predicted with confidence. The majority of the experiments that will contribute to this goal will be performed with the 60 UV (351-nm) beams of the recently upgraded, 30-kJ OMEGA laser system. The key physics issues that will be examined, both experimentally and theoretically, include irradiation uniformity, laser energy coupling and transport, laser-plasma interaction physics, hydrodynamic stability, and hot-spot and main-fuel-layer physics.

Initial Performance Results of the OMEGA Laser System

An important step in the U.S. inertial fusion effort toward demonstrating ignition and modest gain in the laboratory is the validation of high-performance direct-drive fusion capsules. The scientific program at uR/LLE1 is aimed at studying nearignition conditions in direct-drive capsules that achieve ion temperatures of 2 to 3 keV and fuel areal densities of 0.2 g/cm2. Such capsules are expecte...

Broadband Beam Smoothing on OMEGA with Two-Dimensional Smoothing by Spectral Dispersion

LLE Review, Volume 80 197 High laser-irradiation uniformity is an important requirement for successful implosions of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) targets,1 particularly for the direct-drive OMEGA laser system that directly illuminates ICF targets. Direct-drive laser irradiation that is not perfectly uniform imprints on the target surface and perturbs the spherical symmetry. This seeds the ...

The OMEGA Target-Positioning System

LLE Review, Volume 71 145 System Overview Historically, several different styles of target positioners have been developed and deployed at LLE. The initial target positioner on the OMEGA 24-beam system used a 16-target carousel, which was located inside the experimental target chamber. This approach required that the entire target chamber be vented to load the target carousel; it further constr...
